About CHRIS

Veterinary knowledge, practical training and a focus on welfare

I’m Chris Hewison BVetMed MRCVS, a veterinary surgeon and dog trainer. I qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 1995 and have spent my working life helping animals and the people who care for them. Alongside clinical veterinary work, I have a particular interest in canine behaviour, welfare and helping owners build good habits from the start.

Don’t Stop Retrievin’ grew from a simple idea: puppy training should be kind, practical and relevant to the life you want to share with your dog. Classes are reward-based and force-free. We focus on teaching puppies what we would like them to do, making learning worthwhile and helping owners understand the reasons behind the exercises.

I know that puppies are individuals. Some are bold, some are cautious, and all are learning how to live in a human world. The aim is not to compare puppies or expect them to master everything immediately. It is to give each puppy and owner useful foundations, confidence and a plan for continuing at home.

I share life with flatcoated retrievers, so I also appreciate the enthusiasm, sensitivity and exuberance that dogs can bring to everyday life. Whatever your puppy’s breed or mix, the principles remain the same: meet their needs, communicate clearly, reinforce helpful behaviour and make learning a positive experience.

What age should my puppy be?

The course is designed for puppies around 12–16 weeks old at the start. If your puppy is outside that range, ask before booking so we can consider their needs and the course timing.

Do I need previous training experience?

No. The course is suitable for owners who are starting from scratch. We explain the exercises and how to practise them at home.

Are the classes reward-based?

Yes. We use reward-based, force-free methods and aim to teach skills without intimidation or physical punishment.

Will my puppy be expected to play with every other puppy?

No. Socialisation is about safe, positive experiences, not unrestricted interaction. We pay attention to each puppy’s comfort and help owners recognise when space or a break is needed.

What if my puppy is shy, excitable or worried?

Tell me before the course. We can discuss whether a group class is appropriate and how to make participation as comfortable as possible.

Do you guarantee a perfect recall or loose-lead walking in six weeks?

No responsible trainer can guarantee that. The course builds foundations; progress depends on the individual puppy, practice and the situations in which skills are used.

Can we work towards a recognised assessment?

There is an opportunity to work towards the Royal Kennel Club Puppy Foundation Assessment. We’ll explain the requirements and how they fit into the course.

What happens if we miss a class?

You will receive your homework sheets, information sheets and video demonstrations. I also give the opportunity to receive coaching by sharing videos of you your puppy at home
